About Pratham Pratishruti

One of the most popular Bengali books Prothom Protishruti or Pratham Pratisruti is written by bestselling Bengali female writer Ashapurna Devi. This is the first part of famous Satyabati Trilogy. Prothom Protishruti was awarded with Rabindra Puraskar in 1966 and the Bharatiya Jnanpith puroskar in 1977. Prothom Protishruti narrates story of Satyabati and her struggle to fight against social norms, female education and social discriminations in patriarchal society.

Pratham Pratishruti (The First Promise), written by Ashapurna Devi in 1964, is the first novel of her acclaimed trilogy on women’s emancipation in Bengal. The story is set in the 19th century, during the Bengal Renaissance, a time of social reform but also strong resistance from traditional society.

The novel centers around Satyabati, a strong-willed and intelligent girl born into an orthodox Brahmin family. From childhood, she refuses to accept societal norms blindly. Though married at a very young age, like most girls of her time, Satyabati does not let her circumstances silence her voice. She boldly questions oppressive customs such as child marriage, the denial of education to women, and the rigid restrictions placed on widows and daughters-in-law.

Satyabati’s defining strength lies in her unyielding sense of justice and her determination to resist injustice. Her “first promise” is an inner vow: that she will live with dignity, challenge blind traditions, and work for a society where women are valued as individuals. Despite the hardships she faces as a daughter-in-law in a deeply conservative household, she maintains her integrity and independence of thought.

Through Satyabati’s journey, Ashapurna Devi portrays the larger struggle of women in Bengal—caught between tradition and the winds of change. The novel highlights how social reform was not just a matter of laws or education but also of women’s courage to question and resist.

Pratham Pratishruti is not merely the story of one woman but a symbolic narrative of the countless unnamed women who laid the foundation for future generations to seek freedom and equality. By giving voice to Satyabati, Ashapurna Devi captures the essence of women’s resistance and marks a milestone in feminist literature in India.

Ashapurna Devi’s Prothom Protishruti is published by Mitra & Ghosh publishers. It is a hardcover book.
