আমাদের প্রাণের শহর কলিকাতা বা কলকাতাকে ঘিরে আমাদের আবেগ, কৌতূহল ও উচ্ছ্বাস সীমাহীন।কলিকাতার ইতিহাস-চর্চা প্রথম পাওয়া যায় ইংরাজ রাজ-কর্মচারীদের লেখনীতে।
পরবর্তীকালে যাঁর নিরলস গবেষণা ও অধ্যবসায়ের ফলস্বরূপ এই নগরীর ইতিহাস উদ্ভাসিত হয়, তিনি হলেন প্রমথনাথ মল্লিক। তাঁর জীবদ্দশায় ‘কলিকাতার কথা’ বইটির দুইটি পর্ব প্রকাশিত হয়, আদিপর্ব ১৯৩১ ও মধ্যপর্ব ১৯৩৪। দুটি বই-ই বাঙালির অহংকার, অসামান্য আকরগ্রন্থ। রবীন্দ্রনাথ লেখেন, ‘এই বইখানির মধ্যে জ্ঞাতব্য বিষয় অনেক আছে।…’ আচার্য প্রফুল্লচন্দ্র উচ্ছ্বসিত হন, …. পুস্তকখানি অপূর্ব।… ইহাতে বহু মূল্যবান সংবাদ সংগৃহীত হইয়াছে।…’
