The election year of 2024 began with the consecration of Ram Lalla in the Ram temple of Ayodhya and the Ramnami saffron flags fluttering in the streets have in a way started indicating the direction of the election wind. The BJP, which has been in power at the Centre for a decade, is trying to expand its support base in those areas where there are possibilities of its expansion. One such state is West Bengal, where Trinamool leader Mamata Banerjee, who has strongly faced the massive election wave of BJP’s charismatic commander Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is the Chief Minister. Since independence, first the Jan Sangh and then the BJP have made every possible effort to capture Bengal. The scenario in Bengal, once defined as the stronghold of the Left, has been changing since 2016. Now this eastern state has become very important for the BJP. After the Left Front’s tremendous performance in the 2006 assembly elections, its support base gradually started eroding. Mamata has also performed her best in the 2021 assembly elections, so is it now the turn of BJP to come to the central role in the politics of the state?
